Left tackle Jake Matthews had his highest grade of the season by PFF

The Selection Committee will meet on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, in Minneapolis to elect the Class of 2018. While there is no set number for any class of enshrinees, the selection process by-laws provide that between four and eight new members will be selected.

Darby was carted off the field during Sunday’s win over the Washington Redskins with a dislocated right ankle. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that there was no major ligament damage and the corner will miss four to six weeks.

“That’s part of the game,” he said. “Obviously I don’t have the intention of that. I have too much respect for the game, for the people who play it, to purposely go out and injure someone.”

Matthews seemed a little perplexed about the complaint considering how he’s always looked up to Bennett.

“Basically I got stepped on the back of the leg,” Matthews explained. “It was actually a couple of things that kind of added up with my left knee, and I kind of tore something up in there. I don’t even know exactly what it is. I think I fell on it weird one time, then got it twisted one time. Eventually something popped in there.”

The left side of the O-line played particularly well. Left tackle Jake Matthews had his highest grade of the season by PFF, and wholesale jerseys left guard Andy Levitre has had his best-graded games the past two weeks. Center Alex Mack continues to solidify this unit and did a great job moving the nose tackle in the run game. PFF had the unit ranked as the No. 1 run-blocking group and the No. 2 pass-blocking group of Week 15.

Matthews exited the field right before halftime. The medical staff stretched out Matthews’ left knee behind the bench.

For a moment, it appeared Matthews was going to try to return to action. He put on his helmet and attempted to work on his movement out of his stance. However, Matthews was ruled out midway through the third quarter, and Tom Compton filled in at left tackle.

Left tackle Jake Matthews has been exceptional two weeks in a row, and I look for him to continue to be a solid component for the unit. But Matthews will be challenged against a Carolina defense that employs mug linebackers in the A-gap more than any other NFL team. This approach takes any kind of running back chip out of the equation, so there won’t be much receiving help from Atlanta’s RBs this week.

It was his 55-year-old dad, Bruce, a 14-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman and member of the 2007 Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“We were just talking about it took him 17 years … to get to the Super Bowl, and it took me three,” Jake Matthews said Wednesday as the Falcons began preparing to face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. “He was a little envious of that.”

Perryman’s first big play gave the Chargers new life and the stop they needed late. His second set them up to win. He finished with six tackles, including the tackle for loss on Freeman, and an interception. The Chargers exited with their second-straight win.

Seattle’s star-studded defense has injury issues heading into next week’s NFC West clash at Arizona. The third-quarter collapse coincided with the loss of disruptive pocket-crasher Michael Bennett, who injured his knee on a Jake Matthews cut block. Although Bennett confirmed after the game that he should be ready to face the Cardinals, it might be at a limited capacity.

The Senior Finalists and Contributor Finalist are voted “yes” or “no” for election at the annual selection meeting and must receive at least 80 percent support from the Committee to be elected. The Modern-Era Finalists will be trimmed during the meeting from 15 to 10 and then from 10 to 5. The remaining five finalists will be voted on individually, “yes” or “no” and must receive the same 80 percent positive vote as the Seniors and Contributor Finalists to earn election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Class of 2018 will be announced during the “NFL Honors” nationally broadcast award show that evening.
